The Netherlands: Eurovision commentator Cornald Maas wants the country to compete in Basel in 2025

Posted on 10 September 2024 By Admin No Comments on The Netherlands: Eurovision commentator Cornald Maas wants the country to compete in Basel in 2025

He has been involved in the Netherlands’ Eurovision efforts for more than two decades and back in May he famously said “F*ck the EBU” to the press. But now Cornald Maas is arguing that the Netherlands should not withdraw from Eurovision 2025.

The Netherlands has been a stable force at Eurovision ever since the very start of the contest. However, ever since the country’s entry was disqualified in May – becoming the first nation ever to face that fate – Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS has been non-committal about whether the country would return to the song contest.

Commentator Cornald Maas has now made up his mind regarding the Netherlands’ participation. He thinks the country should go. In a red carpet interview with Shownieuws, he said:

“I think the best answer is to participate and to cater for a good entry. That’s a better answer than staying at home, sulking, preaching to the choir, adding to your own annoyance for another year while the caravan moves on.”

“I think that you should always take part, because Eurovision isn’t the European Broadcasting Union. That’s what I’m critical about, not about Eurovision itself.”

Earlier this summer, Twan van de Nieuwenhuijzen resigned as AVROTROS’ Head of Delegation after just one year. Before his tenure started, it seemed like he intended to stay on board for several years. In addition, the selection committee disbanded. Unlike in recent years, the broadcaster has not yet announced a submission period or process.

Instead, AVROTROS has remained firm with their demand for changes among the EBU’s top management. A decision about participation is yet to be made.

What do you think? Should the Netherlands take part at Eurovision 2025 in Basel? Do you agree with Cornald Maas’ words?
