Summer is the quiet period for Eurovision fans as we wait for the new season to commence. Thankfully, the music will always continue and a number of Eurovision artists are still producing new songs for us to enjoy.
Contrary to the commonly perpetuated myth about the song contest killing careers, we’re always thrilled to report that singers associated with Eurovision are thriving.
Here is our latest weekly roundup with a selection of the songs released recently by Eurovision stars.
New music from Eurovision artists: 2024 | Week 32
Benjamin Ingrosso – “All My Life”
From Melodifestivalen 2017, Eurovision 2018, #1 singles, interval act at Eurovision 2024, and most recently a stadium concert, Benjamin Ingrosso has been building and growing his career over the years. The next chapter will reach a peak with the release of his latest studio album on 25 October. Before then, the Swedish star is celebrating this journey with the new single “All My Life,” a spirited pop-rock track in which Ingrosso sings: “Waited all my life / To find out what to do / To find someone like you.” Talking more about the track in a press release, the singer notes:
‘All My Life’ is about finally discovering what you’ve always been searching for, whether it’s love, a lifestyle, a career, or a long-held dream. It embodies the feeling that anything is possible. For me, it’s about both a person and achieving my lifelong dream. This is the most playful song I’ve ever written and produced.”
Jala Brat & Igor Buzov – “Gori more”
The ocean is usually the one place you wouldn’t expect a fire to burn. But nowhere is safe from the heat that Jala Brat brings. Bosnia’s Eurovision 2016 rapper has joined forces with Igor Buzov for “Gori more” (“The sea is burning”). A trap song with flare, the duo rap: “The sea and the city are on fire when our cash is lying down […] But it’s not a problem as long as there’s a gang around me / Because of your beauty, I would lie down in the ground.”
MARO & NASAYA – “CHIQUITINHA”
MARO used her participation at Eurovision 2022 to honour her grandpa and delve into the feelings she had following his passing. But before “saudade, saudade,” there was “CHIQUITINHA.” Written just days before her grandpa passed, MARO reflects on coming to terms with the information that he would soon be departing this world: “I like to think I’ll see you soon / That this is not the end / I hope I made you proud and showed you / Just how much I care.” In a personal note on Instagram, the Portuguese singer said:
“This was the first song I wrote about the loss of my grandpa (2 days before he left us), when I realized he was really leaving and I wasn’t going to be able to say goodbye. If songs had evolutions (Pokémon ref), then CHIQUITINHA is the first of them all, followed by ‘can you see me?’ and a lot of others until ‘saudade, saudade’. I still love it as much as when we wrote it, almost 4 years ago, and it still makes me want to cry. Hope you connect with it in your own special way!”
KALUSH & Ann in Black – “Червона нитка”
KALUSH’s collaboration series has been quite ‘male heavy’ of late. But Ann in Black is here for duet #19 to provide another female voice. She’s teamed up with the Eurovision 2022 winner for “Червона нитка” (“Red Thread”). It’s a steady tune in which the pair sing and rap about always being a comforting force for their loved ones: “Wherever you are / No matter what I do / Know, I’m waiting for you / No matter how sirens wail / No matter how the thunder thundered.”
MELOVIN – “Вбиваєш мене”
“You kill me, it breaks you so / And I am still alive, there is no death, that / Who sees children’s fears in you / You swear to me that you will change the world, but you don’t.”
Sometimes people try to constrain us and destroy what makes us special. But MELOVIN is determined to remain true to himself and is instead adamant that it is the oppressors who will ultimately break. Ukraine’s Eurovision 2018 alum delved into underground tunnels to film the mood video for his latest single, “Вбиваєш мене” (“You kill me”), attempting to capture a sentiment of being closed off and even unable to breathe. Speaking more about the song, MELOVIN stated:
“Often fears are our fantasy and we just need to say to ourselves: ‘Stop’. Look into the dark room that we have been afraid of all our life to make sure that there is no one there. This will be the first step towards our integrity. Because this is the only way we can stand up for ourselves, our choice, our interests. We always have something and someone to fight with, the main thing in this is to remain ourselves, stick to our own and not give in to people who somehow want to influence us, our identity, and now also our nationality.”
Andrei Ursu – VANILLA BOY
Andrei Ursu, formerly wrs, has a new EP for us all. VANILLA BOY contains five songs, including recent single “Lângă tine.” The following three songs are also solo efforts, bringing a variety of pop styles. But the closing track, “Slay Queen,” sees Romania’s Eurovision 2022 star collaborating with Olivia Addams for a pop-rock offering.
AISEL – “De”
AISEL is waiting to hear three all-important words: “I love you.” Azerbaijan’s Eurovision 2018 singer hopes the phrase will leave the lips of a certain individual, but she’s increasingly thinking her love might have been put in the wrong place: “My love is wasted […] Grief came and went / Know that I am without you / Say, say, say I love you / What’s your problem?” The music behind “De” (“Say”) comes with a chilled and summery theme for listeners to enjoy in a laid back setting.
Evridiki – “Gia Tin Kypro”
Evridiki was just a young girl when the Turkish invasion of Cyprus took place in 1974 and her family were separated. In memory of the event 50 years on, the three-time Eurovision entrant has shared the song “Gia Tin Kypro” (“For Cyprus”). Written and produced by Stamatis Morfonis and Bob Katsionis, it builds into a emotive rock track fuelled by guitars, drums and Evridiki’s vocals.
Jendrik – “The Neighbour Song”
Eurovision 2021 star Jendrik is in a happy relationship … but that hasn’t stopped him from taking a look at the bloke next doors. The German singer has developed a little crush for this person, with “The Neighbour Song” revealing the thoughts running through his head: “I’m in love with my neighbour / Just by little observations / Every moment I see him / Feels a bit like a sensation / When he checks his six pack / In the reflection of the glass / I imagine us together.” Musically, Jendrik is accompanied by his ukulele throughout, which gives the song a cutesy feel to it.
Max Mutzke – “California Spider”
Max Mutzke is building up to the release of his upcoming album in October with a new blues song inspired by road trips in the mountains of California. Germany’s Eurovision 2004 act sings of the perils that life can bring our way and the balancing act we have to perform to mange this: “Walking on a tightrope / Walking on fire / California spider / Stakes couldn’t be higher.” If you’re confused on how a “California Spider” ties into all of this, Mutzke explained the back story in a post on Instagram:
“In the summer of ’23, my family and I were driving through the mountains north of Los Angeles when we spotted a large breakfast plate spider casually crossing the highway. We all observed this majestic animal and empathy won against arachnophobia because we wanted the animal to cross the highway unharmed. But an approaching convoy of cars destroyed that hope. We continued our journey in sadness. […] You can be the greatest or the greatest in your world, but it’s all useless if you’re in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
Ralfs Eilands feat. LINN – “Ganslingeri”
Grab your cowboy hat and travel into the Wild West with Ralfs Eilands. Latvia’s Eurovision 2013 representative (as part of PeR) has tried to capture the spirit of western films in his summery offering “Ganslingeri.” Speaking about the inspiration from the song and how the title came about, Eilands noted:
“I literally, phonetically changed the English word ‘Gunslingers’ to ‘Ganslingers’. Historically, these were people who, in the late 19th and early 20th century in the American West, successfully participated in gun duels or otherwise were skilled shooters. In the world of cinema, they are most often seen in westerns. And I think that today their species has not disappeared anywhere – just here among we live, only without firearms. These are people who lead a dynamic, hot-blooded or sometimes even dangerous lifestyle. That’s what the new song is about.”
Fahree & İlkin Dövlətov – “Azərbaycan”
Fahree and İlkin Dövlətov were proud to represent Azerbaijan at Eurovision 2024. Now the duo are honouring their home nation further with the new single “Azərbaycan.” Accompanied by a combination of atmospheric strings and drum machine beats, the pair sing of how the nation will always be in their hearts even if they leave the country: “I’m a child, you’re a mother / That’s why I’m attached to you […] Hey, even if I fly, you’re my home / You are my life, my day, my village / Azerbaijan, Azerbaijan!”
Mandinga & Pandit – “Mentirosa”
Romanian DJ Pandit has teamed up with Eurovision 2012 group Mandinga to drop the new bop “Mentirosa” (“Liar”). It’s certainly a track that can head straight to your summer party playlist. Taking influence from Mandinga’s Latin pop styling, Pandit adds in a dance beat to make the track club ready.
Jan Johansen – “Eld & lågor”
Jan Johansen is heating things up with his latest single. Sweden’s Eurovision 1995 act has shared “Eld & lågor,” which translates in English as “Fire & flames.” Jan is accompanied by a marching drum beat in the verses, which then builds into an anthemic chorus with backing vocal refrain.
Lordi – “Made Of Metal”
Lordi have been delivering hardcore tracks for several decades now and there’s no doubt the group are “Made Of Metal.” Inspired by the all-metal design of the OnePlus Nord 4, Finland’s Eurovision 2006 champions have teamed up with the phone company to release another rocking anthem: “Now do the math, one plus one / Nordic wrath thunder rumble / Made of metal, I am made of metal.”
Marcus Nand feat. Mike Tramp – “Gypsy Song”
Marcus Nand contributed the guitars for Mike Tramp’s 2023 Songs Of White Lion album. But now it’s the turn of Denmark’s Eurovision 1978 representative to feature in Marcus’ new LP. Nand has released an album titled The Traveler, with Mike Tramp appearing on the penultimate track, “Gypsy Song.” It features various electric guitar solos, but it’s acoustic guitars that accompany the pair’s vocals whilst singing about a gathering of gypsy folk: “Gypsies on the river bank / The sound of festive voices and guitars / Weathered faces smile with jet black eyes and celebrate under the stars.”
Elena Ionescu & Jean de la Craiova – “Focul”
Elena Ionescu is keeping the summer fire burning. Romania’s Eurovision 2012 singer, and former Mandinga member, recently collaborated with Jean de la Craiova for the single “Focul” (“Fire”). It’s a sultry mid-tempo offering with percussion instrumentation aimed at getting your hips moving — something for those hot summer evenings.
