Twan van de Nieuwenhuijzen announces departure as the Netherlands’ Head of Delegation … with no immediate replacement

Posted on 29 June 2024 By Admin No Comments on Twan van de Nieuwenhuijzen announces departure as the Netherlands’ Head of Delegation … with no immediate replacement

For several years, Dutch television editor Twan van de Nieuwenhuijzen was a force to reckoned with inside the Eurovision world. The four-time Head of Contest became the Netherlands’ head of delegation last year as a way to shuffle the Dutch team. However, after one season, he has decided it’s time to go.

On his Instagram, Twan shared a picture he took in front of the NOS building in Hilversum ahead of Eurovision 2020. He wrote:

“This picture from 2019 is going to be very current again. From mid August, I’m going to work as a deputy editor at NOS Events! Working with well-known faces and new colleagues on (live) programmes about national events, remembrances and celebrations. After 5 years at Eurovision Song Contest, this chance came onto my path at the right moment. Looking forward to it!”

Twan van de Nieuwenhuijzen had a short but turbulent tenure as the Netherlands’ Head of Delegation. Following the non-qualification of Mia Nicolai & Dion Cooper in 2023, he was tasked to bring the Benelux country back into the final again.

No upcoming Head of Delegation vacancy

That mission initially looked set to be achieved. With Joost Klein one of the favourites for a high position at Eurovision 2024, it seemed that the Netherlands could potentially secure its best result since Duncan Laurence’s victory. However, Joost did not make it to the final as his entry was disqualified following an incident behind the scenes.

Ever since, Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS has been unclear about their Eurovision 2025 ambitions. Speaking to AD, a spokesperson from the broadcaster confirmed that they are still having talks about a possible participation next year. As a result, the vacancy for the next Head of Delegation is to be filled at a later stage.

Are you surprised at Twan van de Nieuwenhuijzen’s departure? Do you expect the Netherlands to take part at Eurovision 2025? Let us know in the comments down below!
