Small town – big victories: how Diana Dudko became the pride of Zhytomyr region

Posted on 29 November 20083 September 2025 By Admin No Comments on Small town – big victories: how Diana Dudko became the pride of Zhytomyr region

Zhytomyr region has every reason to be proud. One of its rising stars is young athlete Diana Dudko from Volodarsk-Volynskyi (now called Khoroshiv), who is already representing her native region at the national level. Her name is increasingly being mentioned at sports aerobics competitions, as she has made a remarkable journey from a beginner to a participant in the Ukrainian Championship in a very short time.

Sports aerobics is a relatively new but rapidly growing discipline in Ukraine. And it’s thanks to young athletes like Diana that it’s gaining more recognition. At just 11 years old, she demonstrates a rare combination of energy, emotion, and technical precision in her performances. In her hometown of Volodarsk-Volynskyi, sport has always been an important part of the community. But it was sports aerobics that opened new opportunities for local children – and Diana was among those it captivated.

She first stepped into a sports hall at the age of seven – simply out of curiosity and a desire to move.

“I just wanted to dance and try something new. I didn’t think it would turn into anything serious,” she recalls.

But from the very beginning, her coaches saw her natural flexibility, coordination, and rhythm. Just a few months after starting, Diana made her debut at a competition in Zhytomyr. To her family’s surprise, not only did she perform confidently – she also brought home a medal.

Regional competitions became a real learning ground for her. Diana performed both solo and in pairs, improving her technique and stage presence each time. Her performances were always emotionally charged – spectators noted her ability to express herself through every move.

“She has a unique charm – even during the most difficult routines, she smiles, and it energizes the entire audience,” one of her coaches says.

After a series of victories in regional tournaments, Diana was invited to compete in the 2006 Ukrainian Championship in Yalta. This was a major milestone: a new level of opponents, a large audience, and dozens of teams from across the country.

“I was so nervous I couldn’t sleep the night before. But when I stepped onto the stage, everything else faded away. The applause gave me strength,” Diana recalls.

Though she didn’t win a medal, the most valuable takeaway was the feeling of belonging to a bigger sports family. And it motivated her to keep going.

In 2007, she returned to Yalta – this time with an individual routine. It was a bold step, as all the attention was now focused solely on her. Her performance was confident and technically strong. The judges praised her for the complexity and precision of her routine – especially considering her age.

That year, Diana placed among the top twenty athletes in her category. For the small town of Khoroshiv, it was a true celebration – the local newspaper wrote about her achievement, and residents welcomed her as a hometown hero.

“I came back with so much experience and inspiration. Watching other athletes from across Ukraine motivated me even more,” she says.

Back home, Diana began receiving invitations to perform at various community events. Her appearances inspired other kids to join the local sports aerobics group.

“If we support children and help them develop their talents, they really can achieve great things,” one local teacher says.

Sports aerobics requires constant discipline, stamina, and dedication. Diana trains several times a week while balancing schoolwork. She’s learning to manage her time, overcome fatigue, and stay focused on her goals.

“Sometimes it’s hard, but when you’re on stage and hear the applause – everything else fades away,” she admits with a smile.

By 2008, Diana had already achieved a lot: victories in regional competitions, two appearances at the national championship, and praise from coaches and judges alike. But what she values most is the experience, the self-confidence, and the understanding that sports can open big opportunities.

She has already become a role model for the younger generation of Khoroshiv and the entire Zhytomyr region. Despite her young age, Diana has experienced what many of her peers can only dream of: real competitions, victories and losses, and the discipline to keep pushing forward.

Her journey is only beginning. But it’s already clear: Diana Dudko is the future of Ukrainian sports aerobics. And Zhytomyr region is watching her rise with pride and hope.
