Eurovision 2025: Australia confirms their participation in Basel

Posted on 30 October 2024 By Admin No Comments on Eurovision 2025: Australia confirms their participation in Basel

In a much-anticipated announcement, Australia will once again take the stage at Eurovision 2025.

The news was unveiled during the SBS Upfronts, where the broadcaster shared its plans for their upcoming 2025 slate of television shows, including the upcoming edition of Eurovision in Basel.

In a blink-and-you-will-miss-it press release, captured by TV Tonight, SBS say:

The Eurovision Song Contest returns to SBS in 2025! The world’s largest live music event is a serious cultural force and a whole lot of fun, celebrating music and artistry from across the globe. This year’s event reached over 163 million viewers across the globe live from Malmö, Sweden, after Loreen’s historic 2023 win in Liverpool, UK. In 2024, Switzerland’s Nemo took out the title with their song The Code. Australia has participated in the contest since 2015, creating a legacy of sending truly unique artists to share their talents on the biggest platform in the world. Who will represent Australia in Basel, Switzerland 2025?

While there has been no announcement as to the selection process for Australia’s entrant, it can be presumed that the selection will be internal, as done since 2023.

Since debuting in 2015, Australia has made a notable impact on Eurovision, frequently finishing in the top ten and earning a reputation for high-quality performances. Australia would be hoping to capture lightning in a bottle similar to standout entries from artists like Dami Im and Guy Sebastian. Australia’s commitment to participate in 2025 reaffirms its place in the Eurovision family, a decision now made on a year-by-year basis.

No doubt the rumour mill will now reach overdrive as to who will be Australia’s entrant for 2025 – Dami Im has previously expressed a desire to return, while Dannii Minogue was heavily rumoured last year. Former Australia Decides entrant, Leea Nanos, has also previously expressed intent, and has put her name forward as an entrant for Greece’s upcoming national final.

With Australia’s announcement, this leaves Poland as the last remaining country from last year yet to confirm participation.
