Summer is the quiet period for Eurovision fans as we wait for the new season to commence. Thankfully, the music will always continue and a number of Eurovision artists are still producing new songs for us to enjoy.
Contrary to the commonly perpetuated myth about the song contest killing careers, we’re always thrilled to report that singers associated with Eurovision are thriving.
Here is our latest weekly roundup with a selection of the songs released recently by Eurovision stars.
New music from Eurovision artists: 2024 | Week 34
alyona alyona & Vyshebaba – “Моє покоління”
Saturday marked Ukraine’s Independence Day. In honour of this, alyona alyona and Vyshebaba shared the music video for their new single “Моє покоління” (“My generation”). The song stems from a poem that Vyshebaba wrote as part of his book Please, do not write me about the war. This particular piece was written at the start of Russia’s invasion of the Donetsk region, where he was fighting as part of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Vyshebaba later decided to invite Eurovision 2024 star alyona alyona to join him in the song and provide the melodic chorus: “My generation, grief to the knees / Because both word and deed are full / Seeds will sprout, even from under stones / Because spring will smile on the brave.”
The accompanying music video features active members of the Ukrainian army. In a post on Instagram, the two artists noted:
“This is a touching video, in which you can see soldiers from the 68th SHB named after Oleksa Dovbush. Right now they continue to protect our country in the Pokrovsk direction. The direction where the enemy has closely approached the cities, where people are urgently leaving, abandoning all their previous lives. Each of us has a tomorrow, only thanks to the courage and indomitability of our army and everyone who helps them return our native Ukrainian lands.”
Edurne – “La Culpa”
Just one week to go until Edurne drops her latest studio album. As a final teaser, Spain’s Eurovision 2015 star has shared the song “La Culpa” (“The Fault”). It’s a sweet pop track that fits nicely in these final moments of summer. Lyrically, Edurne sings about a relationship she wishes could go beyond the friend zone, taking ownership of the fact it’s likely her fault that things can’t progress: “There’s no remedy / For what you’ve done to me / Seriously / I don’t know how to do it anymore / To get rid of that ‘let’s be friends’ thing […] Saying ‘I love you’ softly / And being able to touch with my fingers / That you love me too / You love me too.”
Duncan Laurence, Tanishk Bagchi & Ganesh Waghela – “Feel Your Love (Rapture)”
The Netherlands meets India in this next offering. Eurovision 2019 winner Duncan Laurance has collaborated with Bollywood hitmaker Tanishk Bagchi and music producer Ganesh Waghela, who are now working together as the duo Tangan Tribe. The musical trio have decided to record a new version of the 2001 hit “Rapture” by American duo iiO. Titling this remix as “Feel Your Love,” they’ve transformed it into a contemporary house track. They’ve also updated the lyrics slightly, with Duncan singing: “Feel your love and now I know / I’m never letting go / Heaven is reaching out for me / The rapture tastes so sweet.”
Jill Johnson – “If You Lose Her, You’re A Loser”
Jill Johnson has been enjoying a summer of touring her new music and now concludes the season with the release of her EP I’m Not Dead Yet. Six of the seven songs have already been shared as singles, but with the full record comes the final instalment — “If You Lose Her, You’re A Loser.” A steady country track, Sweden’s Eurovision 1998 singer uses the song to discuss the drama that’s been occuring within her friendship group:
“It’s about my best friend’s infidelity with my other best friend. He doesn’t know that the song is about him and I kind of long for the day when he realises it. ‘You’re a winner if you choose her, but if you lose her, you’re a loser’!”
TVORCHI & Klavdia Petrivna – “Орбіти”
“We are coming down from orbit / We burn with comets / You are the whole world to me / I will become a paradise for you.”
TVORCHI have teamed up with Klavdia Petrivna for the new single “Орбіти” (“Orbits”). It provides a new take on the Eurovision 2023 duo’s electro-pop style, bringing in an artistic quality that is also highlighted in the accompanying music video. The Ukrainian artists tell the tale of two strong and stubborn personalities. Although they wish to be together, as indicated in the lyrics above, they also do not want to be the one who gives in to the other. This ultimately results in a partnership that only works from afar: “You and me forever, but only separately.”
Twin Dive feat. Erica Jennings – “Matau Tave”
Twin Dive are a relatively new rock band on the Lithuanian music scene but are already leaving their mark. For their latest song, “Matau Tave” (“I See You”), they’ve enlisted the help of Eurovision 2001 participant Erica Jennings. It’s an acoustic-style song with fairly minimal percussion accompaniment, but this highlights the harmonies Erica provides even more. The lyrics speak about the people who you truly connect with and can understand on an emotional level, as Twin Dive’s founder Robertas Jancevičius notes:
“The song was written with the closest people in mind – those with whom you have to experience not only fun moments, but also various trials. Despite them, there is always mutual understanding and endless support – the values that this song is about.”
Kate Miller-Heidke – “Linger”
Kate Miller-Heidke shows off her stunning voice in a cover of “Linger.” The song was first released by Irish rock band The Cranberries in 1993. Australia’s Eurovision 2019 star captures the emotion of the track and gives it an almost angelic quality with the updated production and utilisation of soaring strings in the background.
Mike Tramp – Song Of White Lion, Vol. II
Mike Tramp represented Denmark at Eurovision 1978 as part of the group Mabel. But the singer is perhaps most well known for his time in glam metal band White Lion. Over the past couple of years, Tramp has been reliving the glory days and re-recording the band’s songs as new solo efforts. Following last year’s first album, we now have volume two of the collection. There are ten songs in this second edition, including recent singles “Lights & Thunder” and “Lonely Nights.”
Gio Melody feat. Riskykidd & DJ.Silence – “U 2 <3”
Greek alternative-R&B artist Gio Melody has dropped the new EP A.R.T.E this week. The closing track to the record is “U 2 <3,” which is produced by DJ.Silence and features Eurovision 2014 rapper Riskykidd. The Eurovision alum contributes the second verse in English, noting how he has no plans on returning to a relationship that left him with a sour taste: “I ain’t ever calling you back / Are you mad? / After all of that, I ain’t going back to that / Are you mad?”
Secret Garden – “Fionnuala’s Violin”
We conclude with an instrumental piece courtesy of Secret Garden. Norway’s Eurovision 1995 champions are set to release their new album, Songs in the Circle of Time, later in the year. The latest preview is the beautiful piece “Fionnuala’s Violin.” As you might expect from the title, Irish violinist Fionnuala Sherry takes the lead melody, accompanied by oboe and a background orchestra. The piece has an emotional backstory to it, which the duo’s composer Rolf Løvland explains at the start of the music video:
“In 2018, Fionnuala was diagnosed with breast cancer. Our musical calendar was brought to a sudden halt. After a year of treatment, I wrote this piece for her, hoping it would inspire her to start playing the violin again, and I called it ‘Fionnuala’s Violin.’ I remember the first time she played it in her music study in Dublin. It was a very emotional moment.”
