UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is happy to announce that Greek singer, songwriter and music producer Marina Satti — who represented Greece at Eurovision 2024 with the legendary song “Zari” — is joining the Agency’s call for solidarity with refugees. The star is donating the proceeds of her new music video, “Ah THALASSA” (Oh Sea), to UNHCR’s work for child refugees.
The video is a stark reminder that our seas have become the eternal home for tens of thousands of people and turns the spotlight on an ongoing tragedy that we tend to forget.
UNHCR’s representative in Greece, Maria Clara Martin, welcomed this tangible act of solidarity with refugees by Marina Satti, noting:
“Rarely does a week pass without stories from across the Mediterranean and elsewhere of people losing their lives while trying to escape conflict and human rights violations. This news has become appallingly normalised. We are grateful that artists like Marina Satti use their powerful voice to call for an end to such tragedies. They strengthen our urgent plea for a meaningful response. Saving lives, sharing responsibility, and solidarity must be at the heart of such a response.”
Marina Satti – “Ah THALASSA”
The music video of “Ah THALASSA” is a co-productionbetween Hiersoir (France) and Nomad Productions (Greece), directed by Cyprien Clément-Delmas. Lyrics: Lena Kitsopoulou.
All proceeds from Marina Satti and Madhouse Records will be donated to UNHCR to support refugee children.
This new initiative comes amid record global levels of forced displacement, with 120 million people having fled their homes due to conflict, violence and persecution. Half of the world’s refugees are children, who have seen their lives shattered in a moment. Αt the same time, the right to seek safety is under threat in many parts of the globe. With increased wars and conflict throughout the world, thousands of people are taking dangerous sea and land routes to protect themselves and their families. In 2023 alone, over 4,100 people, including hundreds of children, are estimated to have lost their lives or gone missing trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea.
Lyrics: Marina Satti – “Ah THALASSA”
Ah, sea
My sea
Take me into you to drown
Without love
I don’t want to live here on land
But you are so calm, my sea
A mirror reflecting birds
But I am a wave
Calm waters
Ah, sea
My sea, I
Live for a miracle from you tonight
To sink in a storm
Into the dark depths
But you are so calm, my sea
A mirror reflecting birds upon you
But I am a wave
