In November The Sun claimed that Years and Years frontman Olly Alexander was in advanced discussions to sing for the U.K. at Eurovision — and with a song from Dua Lipa.
And on Saturday night Olly confirmed that he will in fact represent the U.K. at the song contest in Malmö.
“I love Eurovision so much, it’s a dream come true,” he told host Claudia Winkleman during the voting interval of the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing finale. “I’m just so, so excited.”
In a press release, he added: “I really can’t believe I’m going to be a part of such a special legacy and fly the flag for the UK in the gayest way possible.”
“I’m determined to give it everything I’ve got and put on an excellent and unforgettable performance for you all!”
United Kingdom: Olly Alexander confirms Eurovision 2024 participation
The Sun‘s November report claimed that his song was a collab with Danny L Harle, who worked on Dua’s “Houdini” and Charli XCX’s “Anthems,” among others.
And on Saturday the BBC confirmed that is also true.
Writing on Instagram, Olly said:
“This was very difficult to keep quiet omg!! so excited to announce that I’m the UK’s Eurovision entry for 2024!”
“I’ve wanted to do this for a long long time and it feels like the right moment to start releasing music under my own name. I’m determined to give it everything I’ve got. i shall put on an excellent and unforgettable performance for you all!! let’s do this!!!”
BBC viewers will remember that Olly has a long-standing relationship with the corporation. He helped ring in 2022 as the star of the BBC’s annual New Year’s Eve broadcast, performing a series of his hits in the build-up to midnight. He also duetted with Kylie Minogue.
Olly has earned five UK top 10 singles and two number one albums over the past decade with Years and Years. As the BBC reports, the group has also hit the charts in Belgium, Ireland, Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands and Sweden — all of which vote at Eurovision.
