Germany: National final date confirmed for 16 February in Berlin

Posted on 7 September 2023 By Admin No Comments on Germany: National final date confirmed for 16 February in Berlin

There’s no other country in Eurovision with a worse track record of late. Germany has come last two times in a row at the contest. But that hasn’t stopped broadcaster NDR/ARD from once again letting the public help them to decide who will represent Germany at Eurovision in 2024. Today more details have been released about Das deutsche Finale 2024.

German broadcaster NDR has kept its plans for Eurovision 2024 a secret for a few months now, so fans didn’t expect information to drop until the end of the year. Nonetheless, today the most important details about the selection method for next year’s Eurovision have been published on the broadcaster’s website. The German national final will take place on 16 February 2024 in the nation’s capital Berlin.

Once again, a number of acts will fight for the German Eurovision ticket through a live show, which will also be broadcast online. Although the exact time slot has not yet been revealed, we can confirm the submission period has already opened! From today until 5 October acts who want to represent Germany in Malmö, Sweden next year, can apply.

NDR wants musicians to apply from any and every genre, as they received a lot of praise for their diverse line up this year. But there are still some changes in next year’s edition: even artists without a song can apply. Nothing more specific has been confirmed yet but we can safely assume that NDR will also contact songwriters to match their songs with acts who don’t have a song ready.

The platform TikTok will once again be involved in Germany’s selection process BUT there won’t be a wildcard vote this time around. Artists who want to represent the country have to apply through the official route on Eurovision.de, but they are invited to use the hashtag #EurovisionSongContest2024 on TikTok to build a hype around their submissions.

German media only yesterday started reporting on a huge change coming for the countries’ Eurovision participation in general. With no official statement released yet, it is said NDR will end its involvement in Eurovision from 2025 on. Allegedly, discussions with other public broadcasters like MDR and WDR have already started. This could, of course, be a reaction from the broadcaster who may have accepted the need for change after the countries’ horrendous track record in recent years.

Over the last eight Eurovision editions, Germany only once placed outside the bottom five. That’s why German fans have been desperate for a change within the Eurovision team for years. But there’s nothing officially confirmed yet and in 2024, NDR will definitely take control once again.

Whilst Malik Harris and Lord Of The Lost came dead last at Eurovision in 2022 and 2023, both acts still believe in the values and importance of the contest. Malik Harris, for example, is a very popular singer in Germany at the moment with various radio hits and is successfully touring around the country. He’s said that Eurovision gave him the career boost he needed, even if he finished last.

How can Germany end its infamous era at Eurovision? Who do you want to see represent the nation at Eurovision 2024? Let us know in the comments below.
