Ukraine confirms Eurovision 2024 participation and Vidbir national selection

Ahead of Eurovision 2023, Ukraine staged one of the most emotional national selections of recent memory, beamed live from an underground bomb shelter.

And today Ukrainian state broadcaster Suspilne has confirmed its participation for Eurovision 2024 and the return of its national final. Details about how to enter the selection will be revealed in due course.

Ukraine confirms Eurovision 2024 participation

As with last year’s competition, musician and composer Dmytro Shurov — better known as Pianoboy — will serve as musical director. Fans of the Eurovision 2023 postcards may remember that he created the musical theme for those short snippets.

In a statement Pianoboy said:

“The call for entries of the National Selection and the new Eurovision season in Ukraine will start soon. I’m speaking to everyone now: tune in, we must create and choose the next song to make the country proud, to win the hearts of Europe and light up a new star from Ukraine. This year, there is a surprise for you all – the viewers will be able to choose one of the finalists themselves. There is so much interesting ahead.”

Oksana Skybinska, Head of Delegation for Ukraine at Eurovision, sang the praises of Eurovision 2024 hosts Sweden.

“Sweden has repeatedly been recognised for its exemplary skills of hosting this international event, with record-breaking 204 million viewers watching the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest in Sweden. Ukraine’s presence at this international event is significant, especially in such a difficult time of war. It will let us bring Ukraine’s voice and message to the whole world.”

“In addition, the National Selection, which will determine this year’s Ukrainian representative, will allow us to invite (at least online) Eurovision fans from all over the world to Ukraine – to show how, despite the difficulties of the war, Ukraine cares about its musical culture. This year’s National Selection will feature innovations allowing Ukrainians to be even more involved in making key selection decisions. More information about the terms and novelties of the National Selection will be announced this week when the application process starts“.
